In what can be described as one of the saddest days for the Ghana Armed Forces, Captain Maxwell Adams Mahama’s corps was flown to the capital City of Accra by the Ghana Air Force on Tuesday evening, May 30th, 2017.
The armed forces officer’s body had been stored in the Dunkwa-On-Ofin Government Hospital since it was retrieved on Monday, at the scene of the horrific lynching.
Captain Maxwell Mahama was an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion (5BN) stationed in Burma Camp, Accra. He had been deployed to the Denkyira Boase environs as the commander of a military group reportedly on anti-galamsey operational duties.
Captain Mahama - allegedly a nephew of former president John Mahama - had been on his routine morning jog armed with his service pistol when local towns women – allegedly alarmed at the sight of the officer’s sidearm - raised the alarm. The town’s assembly man then rounded up residents and proceeded to enact a mob justice of the most ruthless kind.
Witness reports state that the even though the young officer had pleaded with his killers saying that he was an army officer, none of his pleas were heeded in the least.
Popular reports have it that the army officer’s plight had been prompted by a previous day’s incident involving armed robbers, although this account has been largely questioned by the general public.
